A KHORASSAN COPPER INLAID BRONZE INCENSE BURNER IN THE FORM OF A DOVE

The dove’s plumage is elegantly rendered with a bold medallion of seven roundels at the wing joints and a scale pattern at their tips and on the tail. It has a rectangular opening in its breast for the coal box. The back has a roundel on the head and a panel between the wings, both filled with palmette scrolls, as is the band encircling the base of the neck, which is pierced with holes to allow the smoke to escape.

They continued the general form of metal ewers made by Iranian metalworkers under the Sasanian dynasty (ruled about AD 224 to 631) that preceded the Islamic conquest. of slightly flaring lobed form on a splayed foot, wide shoulder and long neck with spout, simple handle, engraved and inlaid in silver and copper with alternating inscription-filled cartouches interspersed by roundels overlaid with vegetal motifs, and cartouches filled with undulating vines interspersed by almond medallions overlaid with vegetal motifs, the shoulder with a band of inscription on a ground of scrolling vines, the foot with a band of cable design, the neck with repoussé lion to each side, surrounded by a band of cable design, the spout with repoussé lion and engraved vegetal and cable decoration 38.5 cm. high

10th-11th сentury. A stunning bowl of a sizable form, mold-formed from translucent blue glass. The vessel is defined by a concave base and a smooth pontil scar, gently-flared walls flat basin with a notable central kick, and a slightly-collared rim with a smoothed lip. A series of pattern-molded concentric circles are presented in relief along the lower body with dozens of thick columns radiating from above.

Including a large and unusual aubergine glass jug, with pinched vertical ribs around the lower body, with trefoil lip and applied double band of trail below, with an applied green glass strap handle, 17.2cm high; a miniature bottle, pinched-in at the base of the neck, 6 cm high; an amber glass juglet with trefoil lip, 10.2cm high; three green glass double balsamaria, two with plain bodies, one with applied spiral trailing, 8.4cm - 12.4cm high and a flask of pale amber, the single handle with ribbon-pinched decoration extending down the side of the pear-shaped body, with raised thumb-spur, 13.2cm high (7) This deep brown vase is remarkable for its size and elegant simplicity. No close parallel is known, but it may be regarded as a rare masterpiece of early Roman blown glass.

GILDED & ENGRAVED OTTOMAN TIMURID-STYLE SILVER JUG WITH TUGHRAS

Turkey, 18th century, height: 14.3 cm, weight: 528 g. This silver jug or tankard is from the Ottoman empire, probably Istanbul, and is marked with prominent assay marks and tughras on both the handle and on the neck. It has a flattened, bulbous body which sits on a low, circular foot. A neck rises to a rimmed mouth. A zoomorphic and pieced handle is attached to the body and neck, and is very much in the Timurid Style. The surface is chased with interlaced arabesques. Originally, the jug was gilded (gold plated). Remnants of gilding remain. The form of the jug mirrors those produced in Ottoman Turkey and the Balkans in the sixteenth century. In turn, these drew inspiration on similar jugs produced in fifteenth century Timurid Iran.

Everted rim, folded over, in and down into mouth; cylindrical neck, flaring at base to join sloping shoulder; elongated piriform body, tapering to pointed base with rounded end; two strap handles with vertical ribbing attached to shoulder, drawn up vertically, turned inward, one in a curve, the other at a right angle, and trailed on to neck below rim.
